Chrysanthemum Stone From Coromandel NZ, this is the only place in the world where this type of Chrysanthemum Stone occurs. It is Spherulitic Rhyolite (created by cooling lava crystallised with spheres of radiating clusters of feldspars and quartz). It has lots of little Chrysanthemum type flowers exploding from the stone all over the place, hence every piece is unique and different. This stone is found in very few stores because of its rarity and difficulty to find.
Obsidian Obsidian occurs between Northland and Taupo and is actually volcanic glass, formed from the rapid cooling of siliceous, usually rhyolitic, lava. We work black obsidian from the far north, and also blue, gold sheen and silver sheen from around the North Islands of NZ.

Petrified Wood & Shell Petrified Wood occurs when trees were buried in volcanic ash and petrified or turned to stone. This generally happens when wood is buried before it can rot and when the ground waters seeping through the wood contain enough dissolved minerals to fill the wood cells. Sometimes the cell structure is preserved completely and at other times only a cast of the tree or limb is left, with agate or other minerals replacing the wood.
Petrified Shells are formed in much the same way as the Petrified Wood, however the shells are encased in a sedimentary maxtrix from the sea floor millions of years ago.

Pounamu Pounamu is the NZ name for NZ Nephrite Jade and Tangiwai (Bowenite) Jade is a metamorphic rock formed under intense heat and pressure caused by the collision of the Earth's tectonic plates, taking hundreds of millions of years to form. Jade is known as "The Stone of Peace" and is the toughest natural substance in the universe.
Tangiwai is softer than Jade and is a variety of the Serpentine Mineral Antigorite, with the highest quality in the world found in New Zealand. It is often highly translucent and is found mainly in South Westland. The word tangiwai came from a beautiful legend relating to the petrification of tear-drops.
